Lake District National Park Authority's Heritage Lottery Funded 'Access to Archaeology' Project



Aims:

To provide information on the archaeology of the Lake District in accessible locations and exciting formats for local residents, visitors, schools, existing and new audiences.

 

Objectives:

To develop existing resources and to create new ones in order that the Lake District archaeological resource and Historic Environment Record (HER) is better understood.

Project Details and Outcomes:

 

The outcomes of the project will consist of:

  • Internet access to the Lake District Historic Environment Record through the Archaeology Data Service (ADS);
  • A mobile exhibition which will undertake a touring programme of Lake District and Cumbria venues;
  • Six leaflets on the archaeology of the Lake District National Park;
  • Education packs for Key Stages 1, 2 and 3, which use Lake District archaeological examples;
  • Information and case studies on the Lake District National Park Authority’s website;
  • An outreach strategy, which will involve libraries, museums, local history societies, schools, youth groups and black and ethnic minority groups.

Resources and Delivery and/or Partnerships:

  • Project Officer (funded by HLF) for two years & eight months.
  • Project Manager, Director and other in-house advisers.
  • External freelance workers including: a leaflet and exhibition designer; an interpretive writer; a photographer; an illustrator; a publisher; an education officer; and an education adviser.

    Funding:

    £171,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with in-kind funding from the Lake District National Park Authority.


  • Duration of Project:

    Two years eight months-from May 2006 to January 2009.

     

    Sustainability: 
    The resources created by the project will be used by the staff at the Lake District National Park Authority to undertake outreach work in the future.  Any future developments will depend on own funding or other external sources.


    Evaluation:
     
    Self-monitoring against the initial Project Design.  There are also regular meetings of an internal Project Management Group and a Project Advisory Group.
