Unlocking Buckinghamshire's Past

Aims:

To widen public knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of Buckinghamshire’s past through access to information held by the County Sites and Monuments Record (SMR)

Objectives:

  • Increase public and educational use of the SMR
  • Promote greater awareness and appreciation of local heritage amongst community groups
  • Promote access to and engagement with monuments in the countryside

Project Details and Outcomes:

  • Internet access to SMR database with user-friendly front-end, map and text searches, illustrated glossary and timeline, graphic materials, 3D reconstructions and virtual reality walk-throughs of key sites, users’ gallery and feedback
  • Downloadable schools education modules aimed at Key Stages 2 and 3, supported by teacher’s packs, worksheets and interactive ‘timepod’
  • Local community modules on Heritage Resources and Getting Involved in Archaeology
  • Public access module with visitor information encouraging recreational use of selected sites
  • Improvements to visitor facilities in SMR search room including information panels and dedicated PC

Outreach programme of touring exhibition, illustrated lectures, guided walks and other activities, supported by display boards, information leaflets and audio-visual presentations


Resources and Delivery:

Project Officer – full time, 2 ½ years

External IT Consultants: Exegesis SDM Ltd

External Graphic Design Specialists: Oxford Archaeology

Partnerships:

External focus groups including local community groups and societies

Local schools and teachers

Funding:

£150,000 Heritage Grant from Heritage Lottery Fund, with match funding from Buckinghamshire County Council, Buckinghamshire Archaeological Society, Council for British Archaeology South Midlands Group and Chilterns Conservation Board (AONB).


Duration of Project:

March 2004 – November 2006

Sustainability:

The project will create online resources which will continue to be updated, enhanced and added to, after the project has ended. Outreach events will also continue.


Evaluation:

Regular reporting to internal Project Management Team and external Project Steering Group; monitored against the agreed Project Design by the Heritage Lottery Fund.
