North Yorkshire HER

The North Yorkshire County Council Historic Environment Record (HER) covers the county of North Yorkshire excluding the areas of the City of York, the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks. The HER includes a computerised index system, as well as hard copy detailed information on maps, photographs, reports, journals and other files. The HER consists of over 50000 computerised records, plus non-computerised aerial photographs, maps, fieldwork reports, a small library, project and parish files. The computerised records are largely index data and are not comprehensive, as not all hard copy information has been indexed. This means there may be information in our hard copy systems not accessible via the Heritage Gateway. However, the HER is constantly being enhanced to create a full index. Once the indexing is competed, the aim will be to add depth and detail to the records through further enhancement. The HER is open for public consultation by appointment only.
