HER 12701 DESCRIPTION:- 'Clay Pit' recorded on the OS 1st edition 25" map of c.1880. {Source Work 5134.} Shown as an unlabelled feature on the OS 2nd edition 25" map of c.1900. {Source Work 5134.} Can be presumed to be associated with Hawkwell Brickworks when this ws founded c.1900 but when first recorded it may have been the source of raw materials for a brick kiln documented in 1878 (SMR 12702) c.50 due east. {Source Work 802.} 2003 - This area was mapped at 1:10,000 scale as part of the English Heritage: Gloucestershire NMP project. A large Post Medieval clay pit centred at SO 6425 1537 is visible on aerial photographs. It is possible that this is associated with Hawkwell Brickworks (SMR 4356) when this was founded c.1900 but when first recorded it may have been the source of raw materials for a brick kiln documented in 1878 (SMR 12702). {Source Works 4249, 7549 and 6880.} |
