Public house with restaurant. Public house c1870 in classical
style, restaurant 1928 in art deco style. The latter built for
the Kemp Town Brewery.
Public house: render over brick, mansard slate roof;
restaurant: rendered second floor, mosaic of gold, beige and
blue surrounding ground and first floor with full-height metal
windows separated by metal dado, roof concealed behind
parapet.
L-plan corner block, restaurant fronting Western Road and
public house returned along Brunswick Street West. Public
house: 3 storeys plus attic, 1 bay comprising a 2-storey oriel
canted bay, ornamented by pilasters with decorative capitals,
also to parapet, similar decoration on 4-bay return, 2 oriels
and parapet to flat-roofed porch now with glazed addition.
Interior not inspected.
Restaurant: three storeys, three bays, second floor with
tripartite window, late C20 fenestration, original metal
windows to ground and first floor curved frontage to recessed
entrance, sunburst leading, masonic symbols on dados, mosaic
surround with lettering over first floor 'Freemasons
Restaurant/ Kemp Town Brewery' with griffin-headed grotesques
below.
Interior: almost complete survival of original fittings on
both floors. Art deco style moulding to ceiling beams,
original light fittings, some built-in furniture and
staircase. A fine example of art deco styling.
