HER 48801 DESCRIPTION:- 2015 - Severn Vale NMP Project. The remains of a First World War armament depot are visible as earthworks on historic aerial photographs and were mapped as part of the Severn Vale NMP project. Located through fields west of Gossington and centred at SO 72388 02217, the railway line was built to service His Majesty's Magazine No 23. The sinuous earthwork remains of the former railway course extends from SO 72388 02217 about 1919 metres SE to SO73352 01762, where it joins the mainline of the Bristol to Birmingham railway. The railway embankment is visible in fragments of various lengths from 68 to 401 metres and measures about 6.5 metres wide. At SO 72708 02151 is the rectangular concrete platform about 29 x100 metres for what was once Standard Magazine Number 75. At SO 72186 03651 is a rectangular area that was formerly one of the floors for the munitions magazines, measuring about 33 x 28 metres. Aerial photographs taken in 2014 indicate that some fragments of the old railway line have been plough levelled, whilst others remain extant earthworks. The remains of Magazine Number 75 also remain visible. {Source Works 4249 & 14353 } |
