Summary
An extensive area of cropmarks comprising causewayed enclosure, E-W straight double ditches (?cursus/?Roman road), and several other enclosures & enclosure groups. Roman occupation evidence recovered from excavations (1951-2) and field-walking.
Full Description
Crop marks show an interrupted ditch system, or causewayed enclosure, comprising three concentric ditch circuits, overlain by a series of rectilinear enclosures and other features. The causewayed enclosure is of Neolithic date and the other features are likely to be Iron Age or Roman. The cropmarks lie on a gravel island between two bands of alluvium. West of the main area, linear cropmarks can be seen, including parallel linears thought to be a trackway.
Excavations in 1951-1952 reportedly uncovered a hearth, and found 4th century pottery. Pottery of 2nd to 4th century date was found during field-walking in 1982.
The site is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (County No. 78).
