Full description
R4, Bishop's Palace (NR) (Site of).
O1, A palace used to stand on this site and it was here that Bishop Cox entertained Queen Elizabeth in August 1564. The property now belongs to Queens College Cambridge (R2 & R3). Extant in 1564.
O3, We visited the site with Mr. Chris Lewis of the VCH staff, who tells us that the episcopal attribution derives from a documentary misunderstanding: the site is in the land of Oakington Barracks; it occupies slightly higher ground; there is no trace of any earthworks; aged trees stand here; the CRO's 1812 Inclosure map shows nothing here.
