Full description
Late C19 and mainly C20 terraced gardens of 2ha with marine aspect. A rocky island site exposed to gales and salt spray but virtually free from frost. North and east sides are more protected than others. The gardens, lying below and round the castle, are governed in their layout and plant material by their situation. Shelter belts and clumps of pines and shrubs are planted beside the rocky terraces. Given to the National Trust in 1954. A small walled garden, C18, remains in separate use and ownership. Grade II Listed garden.
