Full description

The settlement of Pawton is first recorded in 905 when it is spelt "Polltun". Gover mentions that the estate was granted by Edgar to the Bishop of Sherborne (b1). At the time of the Domesday survey Pawton is described as having "land for 60 ploughs... Pasture 6 leagues long and 1 wide" (ie a very large manor by Cornish standards) (b3). The name may be English or part Cornish in origin, containing either the Cornish or English element pol meaning 'pool', with the Old English suffix tun meaning 'estate, farmstead' (b1). Henderson records that the manor of Pawton had a manor house, tithe barn and deer park (26163.01 - 26163.04). Henderson also mentions a field called the 'Graveyard', a possible cemetery (26163.05).
