Full description

In the late C12 and early C13, Robert de Cardinham held Restormel. In his time the palisade was replaced with a circular stone curtain or shell keep, which abutted the gatehouse on either side. The curtain was built by cutting back the inner slope of the ringwork bank and leaving the earth standing to a height of over 2m against the outer face of the masonry. Wooden buildings were erected against the inner face of the curtain wall. Only slight traces of these are left (b11).
