Full description
Carn Euny prehistoric village was established in the Iron Age before 500 BC and was occupied well into the Roman period. It is situated on a south-west slope at approximately 160m above OD, below the Iron Age hillfort of Caer Bran (16048) 530m to the north-east, whilst 1.0km to the south-east is the Iron Age/Romano-British settlement of Goldherring (16046).
The settlement of Carn Euny was discovered during the first half of the nineteenth century by miners prospecting for tin and was visited by WC Borlase between 1863 and 1868 (b1) when he carried out excavations in the fogou (28920.14). The settlement is marked on the OS map of 1908 (b2). During the 1920s Courtyard Houses 1 (28920.10) and 2 (28920.11) were partially excavated by Favell and Taylor. In 1953 the site was taken into the guardianship of the former Ministry of Works and cleared of gorse and bramble.
Between 1964 and 1972 an extensive series of excavations was carried out of nine hut circles (28920.01 - 28920.13), plus the examination, repair and consolidation of the fogou and round corbelled chamber, the latter appearing to pre-date the former. Four main phases of occupation were distinguished: Phase I, the earliest, from 5th century BC or earlier to the 4th century BC; Phase II spans the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC ending in the mid-1st century BC; and Phase III which is represented by the courtyard houses and cordoned pottery starts around 50 BC and lasts until the mid-1st century AD; while Phase IV covers the 2nd century to the 4th century AD during which native pottery influenced by Roman wares were produced.
There is no evidence of the village having been occupied after the 4th century AD and the absence of medieval pottery indicates that it was abandoned for over one thousand years. Some post-medieval pottery was found (28922), particulary in Courtyard House 1 and may be associated with later activity in the fogou, the long passage of which was found by Borlase to have been completely filled with earth and the east entrance blocked by a large boulder and packing stones (b1, b3, b19).
The settlement is shown on the OS map of 1968 (b10) and was surveyed by the OS at 1:2500 in 1960 (h1). Russell in 1971 lists the extant remains of huts and a fogou at Carn Eunny (b13).
A post-medieval dwelling (28921) lies on the west side of the settlement and was excavated in 1968 by Russell.
The monument was included in the Schedule on 28/9/1934 and the scheduling was updated 18/3/1996.
