Full description

The settlement of Tregothnan is first recorded in 1280 when it is spelt "Treguyhenan" (b1). The name is Cornish and contains the elements tre meaning 'estate, farmstead' (which implies a settlement of early medieval origin), and goth meaning 'goose' (b3). The site is presently occupied by the mansion of the Earls of Falmouth, dating from the C17 (22695.1) with associated gardens and park (22695.2) (b2).
