Full description

A linear group of fifteen barrows, only three of which now survive (4666.03 - 4666.05).

The existence of barrows is suggested by the field-names 'Burrows' and 'Burrows Moor' in the 1840 Tithe Award (b1). The only description of the group as a whole is an early C19 account in the West Briton of its destruction (b2-b4). According to this, there were fifteen barrows on the cliff top placed nearly in line, some connected by curved mounds, the largest having long been used as sea marks. Three barrows were destroyed between 1819 and 1821 (4666.08 - 4666.10) and the rest were due to be removed shortly.

Two or three of the barrrows (4666.01 - 4666.02 and 4666.06) were excavated during the C19 and these may be the same ones that survive today (4666.03 - 4666.05). The latter three have been severely mutilated, but are Scheduled Monuments (h1), which were re-survyed by the OS in 1962 (h2) and are now grass covered and in generally good condition (h3).

Flint flake and arrowheads from Barrowfields are now at Plymouth Museum (b5, b6). Two excavated urns are at the Royal Institution of Cornwall.
