Full description

House E at Carn Euny was excavated by Christie in the 1967 season (h2). It consists of part of a curved wall on the west which it is believed once belonged to an oval structure measuring a maximum 7.3m diameter. The north-south walling is now absent and the bisecting House A (28920.01) cuts across this house causing much damage. It contains numerous pits and post holes, some stone-lined; and gullies, several of a phase earlier than the hut. A whitish material, best preserved on the north side, is thought to be traces of a floor, and overlaid gullies and post holes of the earlier phase. House E belongs to the later phase of Iron Age occupation of the site which continues into and probably to the end of the Roman period. The structure, with House B (28920.03) could represent the fragmentary remains of a courtyard house (b1). The positions of the stone covered drains suggest that the entrance to the house was in the west (b2). A fair amount of pottery was found in this house, where cordoned sherds occurred in a gully and several decorated sherds were found in the occupation level over the rab; a clay spindle whorl was found in association with the remains of the floor in the house (b1). A fine squared granite slab with a hollow thought to be a grinding stone rather than a post-socket was found and an annular glass bead belonging to the Roman period was associated with the remains of floors (b1). The monument was included in the Schedule on 28/9/1934 and the scheduling was updated 18/3/1996.
