Full description
The West Gate was comparatively less important than the other gates yet it was repaired in 1646 (b1). Sited by the OS, on the basis of Peter's map (b2), at SX 3313 8444, but Steve Hartgroves (CAU) believes it may have been at approx SX 3312 8445 if, as seems likely, modern property boundaries reflect the line of the town wall (S Hartgroves, pers comm and see 2749). It was demolished in 1812.
