Full description

Restormel formed part of the manor of Bodardle which was held in 1086 by Turstin the Sheriff. It was his son, Baldwin who probably built the first castle around 1100. The first castle was a circular earthen bank with a ditch. It had a stone gateway. On top of the bank was a timber palisade. Part of the bank and ditch still survive. Stonework from the original gateway remains within the later entrance (b11). It is possible that there was a bailey built at the same time but until excavation has been carried out the date will be unknown. Earthworks are visible on aerial photographs (p1) and were plotted as part of the NMP.
