Full description

In front of the castle gateway, where the ground slopes gently down to a saddle before rising to the main ridge, is the site of a rectangular outer court or bailey. This is now enclosed with a slight bank of earth and was never strongly fortified. Here were a great hall, kitchen and domestic offices, together with stables for 20 horses. Water was brought to the castle via a lead pipe from the adjacent hill. The OS could find no surveyable remains of the bailey (h1). Its outline is visible on air photos (p1) and was plotted as part of the NMP.
