Full description

The cemetery of Glasney Collegiate Church covered approximately half an acre (b16). It was probably situated in the area betwen the canons' houses on the south side of the complex and the church on the north side. A local tradition of the discovery of tiles when fair tents were erected on the recreation ground may reflect the survival of pathways below the turf. The retention of this area as open space may also reflect the presence of the cemetery, though the dampness of the ground would also deter building.
In 2005 the Friends of Glasney commissioned the Historic Environment Service to undertake an assessment and evaluation of the site of the College (b14). Graves were noted in just one of the five trenches; six grave cuts were recorded in Trench 3, one in the interior of the church and five outside, all aligned E-W. Human remains were noted in grave 309, but left in-situ; time depth was evident as Grave 309 was cut by Grave 311 and Grave 319 was cut by Grave 313 (b14, p27). Graves were left as far as possible undisturbed during the excavations.
