Full description

Two of the burials in the adult (eastern) part of the cemetery at mawgan porth were buried in a contracted posture. One of these is very interesting as a sherd of medieval pottery was found at his head. This suggests that the burial was inserted into a known grave yard, long after the abandonment of the original site, and moreover, it was still clear where the earlier burials had been, as the grave was carefully placed and correctly orientated. It is suggested that a lost seaman may have been buried during rigor mortis in the nearest available graveyard (b2, b10). It does seem rather more likely that the sherd was intrusive, and c14 dates are urgently needed to reassess the problem (rw pers comm).
