Full description

The remains of St Catherines Castle is marked in antiquity script on current OS maps (b4). It is a small harbour defence castle built as part of Henry VIII's south coast fortifications in 1539. It was restored in 1885. The castle is a Grade II listed building as well as a Scheduled monument (b3). A site visit by the OS revealed that the remains consist of a D-shaped blockhouse, containing an original doorway, surrounded by a curtain wall (h 1). The castle was recorded during the Cornwall NMP and is visible on aerial photographs (p1). The 19th century gun battery immediately to the south of the curtain wall and block house are recorded in SMR record 57683.
