Full description
St michaels mount is assumed to be the site of "st michael's church" mentioned in the domesday survey for treiwal (truthwall) manor (b4,b5). The tenant of treiwal was the church of a saint not canons. The use of the term "ecclesia" in domesday is unusual in cornwall and implies a substantial establishment and this entry compares with st petroc's (b5). Edward the confessor granted st michaels mount and its land to the norman abbey of mont-saint-michel in 1050 (b1). Pearce suggests this abbey acquired an existing church (b3). However, the priory was not built until after a charter was granted by the count of mortain in the mid 12th c (b5).
