Full description

A fortification known as `the Bulwarks' is extant on St Ives Head. Matthews refers to them as the `two edges' (possibly hedges) (1). The remains consist of ramparts and 2 bastions which cut across the neck of the promontory (2-4), defending a gun position at the top of the hill (5). Sheppard notes that `the Bulwarks' are mentioned in 1535. The site was probably utilised during the Civil War as there is an account of a payment made `to men in breade and beere aboute the bulworks' in 1645. Survey by the O.S. in 1961 revealed details of the fortifications and there is a good description of them on the OS index card. The OS confirm that the remains are 16th century or later (h1). The ramparts are visible on air photographs (6-8) and were plotted for the NMP. Analysis of the lidar imagery by the North Cornwall RCZAS has identified a possible earthwork 18m to the east of the chapel, however, this has not been verified by a site visit (9-10).
