Full description

The 1969 excavation at Crane Godrevy revelealed the outline of a hollow similar to house X (37066.21) which is interpeted as the site of a similar early 12th century house, house Y, the walls being almost robbed. The hollow, whose longer axis is north east-south west may have contained a rectangular structure with rounded corners and measuring up to 2.4m by 5.2m. A gap in the bedrock suggests an entrance on the west side, faced with stone and an oblong trench which may have been a hearth (h3, b4). The excavations produced Sandy Lane and Grass-marked potteryThe site was surveyed at 1:2500 by the OS in 1962 and is listed by Thomas in 1965.
An oval structure at this location is visible on air photographs (p1) taken before the site was excavated. On the photo, the remains of the house appear to be more substantial than recorded above, with the walls surviving to some height. The feature was plotted as part of the NMP.
