Full description

A rockcut well which first appears on the 1907 1:2500 OS map, recorded as a circular feature within a square enclosure or structure which is marked 'W' (for well) (b1). It doe not appear on the 1888 map, which shows this area as a quarry (7905.19). The 1907 map also shows a straight boundary running from its south west corner to meet the Garrison wall at right angles just south east of Bartholomew battery (7906.28) (b1). The Adams in 1984 describe a rough hewn shaft approx 20 feet (6.1m) deep and approx 8 feet (2.4m) in diameter surrounded by a 4ft 6in (1.37m) high brick wall on a concrete base and suggested it was either an undeveloped well or a tin mining probe (b3). This is probably associated with the 1900s fortifications (b4). The monument is included in the Schedule. The site is visible on aerial photographs (p1) and was plotted as part of the NMP.
(b4) - Parkes, C, 1994, Pers Comm, ,
