Full description

Battery 'A', recorded on the 1908 OS map and one of two batteries noted by Troutbeck, is situated at the bottom and seaward side of Innisidgen Carn. The earthwork is well preserved here, being up to 1.4m high and 3.0m wide (h1). This is one of four batteries (7454) and is connected by breastwork (7455). The site was visited in 1988 (h2) and found to be as decribed by the OS fieldworker. The battery stood on a platform cut into the slope beneath the carn by up to 1.0m, and built out from it to a similar height on the north east (seaward) side. The bank enclosing it was of earth and stone, with stone facing visible on the outside, and incorporated several large natural boulders. The gaps at either end through which the footpath now passes appear to be original entrances, approx 0.7m wide.
The monument was included in the Schedule on 16/11/1998.

When the site was revisited in 2008-10 (4), this was the only one of the four bastions to be located through dense vegetation.
