Full description

Prior to the 1994 revision of the Garrison defences SMR this site was recorded under PRN 7423.17 (b7).
A sallyport consisting of a stone walled and roofed passage with portcullis on the west (inner) side forms part of the Elizabethan curtain wall across the Garrison neck (7906.04). With another sallyport to the south (7906.07) and the gateway to the north (7906.05) it gives access to the defended Hugh and the Star Castle (7902). A third sallyport links Upper and Lower Benham batteries (7906.08). The site is a Listed Building, Grade I and is Scheduled (h1). The sallyport is not marked on the 1655 plan (b1) or that of 1742 made after Tovey's works (b2), but appears on the 1834 plan (b3). It is recorded as sallyport on the 1888 and 1907 OS maps (b4, b5) but not on the 1981 OS map which shows domestic buildings and gardens blocking the access on the former glacis outside the curtain wall (b6). The 1978 OS fieldworker describes the sallyport as built around 1600 but now blocked (h2). The granite structure with portcullis groove west of the curtain was noted in 1990 (h3). The site was surveyed in 1991 (h4). In 1993 the passage was found to be virtually intact, though obstructed by use as a store (h5). The east entrance is formed of granite pillars and lintel, with granite steps rising inside. The monument is included in the Schedule.
