Full description

Two Post Medieval batteries, dating to the civil war, on Toll's Hill, St Mary's, covering Crow Sound. Both batteries are illsutrated on the 1908 OS map (1), described as 'the remains of two[…] sod batteries[…] NW of Toll's Island' (2). The batteries are visible in aerial photographs (5, 6).

Troutbeck recorded a single battery on the hill in 1794 (3), 'where is now one gun, a fix-pounder difmounted', and O'Neil (4) describes several royalist batteries in the area, commanding Crow Sound.
