Full description

Prior to the 1994 revision of the Garrison defences SMR, this site was recorded under PRN 7423.02 (b1).
The earthworks along the Garrison coast, the first fortifications to enclose the whole peninsula, are possibly of Civil War date with some earlier elements (7903). They consist of a breastwork from Lower Broom battery (7906.17) to Well battery (7906.09), with associated redans and batteries (7901.03 - 7901.22). Also of the C17 (and so recorded under 7904) are the eroded platforms east of the Upper Broom battery (7904.01) and east of the Lower Broom battery (7904.01). The fortifications along the west side of Porthcressa from which they projected before Tovey's C18 rebuilding (7905) was however probably a curtain wall (7906.15) rather than a breastwork (b1). The monument is included in the Schedule.
