Full description

A single courtyard house lies downslope from and to the south-west of the village at Chysauster (36008). It was first surveyed at the time of a MoW survey (h1), resurveyed by the OS in 1960 (h2) and again by CAU in 1985 (h3). Weatherhill describes the remains of an artificial platform similar to those on which Courtyard Houses 4 (36008.09) and 6 (36008.1) are built. Its confused and overgrown features suggest a courtyard house of approx 30m by 24m occupying much of its south-eastern part. A south-east facing entrance is traceable, as are the shapes of the courtyard and round room, and a possible long room can be detected to the north-east of the courtyard. Other features on the platform are difficult to define; little stonework is visible and no jambs can be seen. The overgrown banks reach a height of up to 0.9m. The house remains unexcavated (h4, b5).
