Full description
Langdon describes St Buryan churchyard cross standing to the south of the church porch. It consists of a fine four holed head in a very good state of preservation on which the limbs of the cross and angles of the ring are beaded on all external faces and the small portions between them are deeply splayed inwards and pierced by a small circular hole. On the front is a Christ figure and on the back a cross with five projecting bosses. The almost square base of rough granite forms a flight of five steps. The cross is 0.8m high, width of head is 0.66m, width of shaft, 0.3m, the thickness at the bottom is 0.25m and at the top, 0.2m (b2). The cross is marked on the OS map of 1908 (b3) and was surveyed at 1:2500 by the OS in 1960, who record that the cross head is cemented into a plain socket stone 1.1m square and 0.4m high. This and the four step pedestal base are probably of much later date than the cross. Langdon's measurements are correct (h1, p1, p2). Mercer in 1970, prior to scheduling in 1972, records a fine stone wheel-headed cross 0.6m in diameter, but mistakenly describes a crucifixion figure in relief on both faces of the cross (b5). Radford in 1973 dates the cross to late pre-conquest (b7) and it is given as evidence for a lann at St Buryan by Pearce in 1978 (b8). Sheppard in 1980 reports a disjointed plinth and that the cross is slightly loose in its base (b9) with no change in condition in 1983 (b10). The monument was included in the Schedule on 24/10/1972 and scheduling was affirmed on 4/9/1996.
