Full description

Chynalls cliff castle is mentioned by Thomas (b1) and recorded by Cotton (b2) and is shown on the OS map of 1963 (b3) and listed by Dowson in 1968 (b4).

The earthworks comprise two banks with an intermediate ditch which cut off a headland promontory of approximately 1.5 hectares. The outer rampart peters out in the south and is up to 1.0m high. The inner rampart is stone revetted and is up to 2.6m high. The original entrance was probably in the centre of the ramparts where a modern footpath now crosses (h1).

The castle is rocky and covered in gorse and heather with the occasional patch of grass (h3, b6). A linear earth and stone bank 50m in length is visible on aerial photographs (p1) and was plotted as part of the NMP.
