Full description
The Doniert Stone is recorded on modern OS maps as 'King Doniert's Stone' (b12).
The stone was recovered from a cruciform pit (17262) and set up in 1849 (b2).
Langdon describes the stone as an inscribed and ornamented cross base, which is panelled on all four sides and has a wide flat bead on the angles. In the top stone a large mortice has been deeply sunk, which in the course of time has caused portions of the back and right side to break away. A plinth surrounds the base. The upper portion is recessed and tapers to the top (b5). The height of the stone is 1.37m, 0.91m wide at the base and is 0.61m thick. Three sides are ornamented with bold and deeply cut plaitwork, or knots (b5).
On the front of the stone is an inscription 'DONIERT ROGAVIT PRO ANIMA' or "Doniert has begged that prayers be offered for the repose of (his) soul" (b5, b7, b13). Doniert has been conjecturally identified with Dumgarth, King of Cornwall, who died c878 (b7).
The monument is included in the Schedule, revised in February 1992.
