Full description

Excavations begun in 1955 at Crane Godrevy revealed a revetted bank and an outer rock-cut ditch enclosing an area of approximately 0.4 hectares. Traces of houses were found in the interior in the form of post-hole settings, all else having been destroyed by later buildings. The enclosure is of an irregular triangular shape with rounded corners with internal measurements of up to 67.0m north-east - south-west and 42.7m north-west - south-east with an entrance on the north-west which had been partly back-filled. There was probably a main entrance on the south side, but this has not been confirmed by excavation. Pottery finds including coarse wares, buff amphora sherds and Samian ware suggest occupation from the first century BC to the second or third century AD, possibly extending to the fourth century.
The site was re-occupied in the twelfth century (37066.2).
The OS surveyed the site at 1:2500 in 1962, and recorded no surface indications of the enclosure but noted that its position can be identified from the cross-cuttings of the excavations (h2). Mercer visited the site in 1970, prior to scheduling in 1976, and recorded visible remains of the bank up to a height of 0.9m, now under rough pasture and couch grass (h4, b6). Sheppard in 1980 (h5, b8) and 1985 (h6, b9) reports the north east field in corn and the remainder of the area used as rough pasture with many rabbit holes. Sections of the enclosure bank along its western circuit are visible as a low earth bank on air photographs (p1) and were plotted as part of the NMP.
