Full description
1> Excavation of defences by W Ford 1970-71. Pottery finds.
2> W Ford; B Hobley examined 110m of town wall in Godiva Street 1971. Evidence
for a 12th century ditch and rampart beneath a 14th century wall, but purpose not established.
The rear of wall and bank lined with cesspits indicating proximity of domestic
occupation. Trenching N of wall revealed a substantial town ditch. There was
no evidence for wall running southwards from Godiva St to Gosford Gate. A
stretch of extant sandstone wall behind Pearson's Tyre building to the S of
Gosford Gate was also examined but this proved not to be part of the town
wall.

4> In 1970 a section of some 60m length was excavated at the north-east corner of the medieval city along the former Godiva Street where the wall is believed to date to between 1480 and 1534. The surviving stonework was subsequently conserved and is today a Scheduled Ancient Monument, standing in part above the ground.
