Full description

1> 16th century manor gatehouse incorporating parts of 2 wings of 14th century manor house, 15th century
1st floor of north wing. Much restored. Timber frame, plaster infilling,
some ground floor stonework. Gables either end of tiled roof. Central
carriageway with blocked 4 centred arched doorway, 16th century newel staircase, 1st
floor 2 curved headed stone fireplace surrounds. The Manor House settled
1337 on the Black Prince, who visited it for long periods, as did Queen
Isabella.
2> Earls Half, seat came to manor of Cheylesmore... Queen Isabella came into
possession of manor of Coventry, now called Cheylesmore (1330)...No evidence
regarding first building, earliest appearance can only certainly be traced to
c1250. Full history of estate. Probably before city walls built, house and its immediate
environs were enclosed by moat, some of remains of which appear to have
survived until the early 16th century etc etc.
6> The only manor house which stood within the actual walls of the late medieval city of Coventry was that of Cheylesmore, commanding the large Cheylesmore Park. The north range gate-house survives today and constitutes the city's modern Register Office.
