Full Description
Stripping of an area of ground in 2007 prior to sand and gravel extraction revealed a low river terrace flanking a wide palaeochannel. The slightly higher area of gravels on this terrace preserved traces of several linear ditches, recorded during a watching brief. Two of these features ran parallel to each other and may represent a possible north-south trackway. A ditched boundary appeared to run towards this at right angles, possibly demarcating a field. The features remain undated, but comparable arrangements of ditches or gullies recorded in earlier phases of excavation at Swarkestone have been dated to the Iron Age and Romano-British periods. (1)
