HER Number:MDV102114
Name:Relict field boundary east of Hartland

Summary

A linear earthwork bank is visible on aerial photographs taken between 1946 and 1999. A field boundary is depicted here on the 1844 Tithe map, but not the 1880s-1890s Ordnance Survey mapping. It is therefore interpreted as a former field boundary bank, subdividing an enclosed strip field of medieval origin, which became disused by the second half of the nineteenth century. It may survive as a slight earthwork.

A short linear feature, aligned approximately east to west and approximately 4 metres in width and 15 metres in length, is visible as an earthwork bank on aerial photographs taken between 1946 and 1999. A field boundary is depicted here on the 1844 Tithe map, but not the 1880s-1890s Ordnance Survey mapping. It is therefore interpreted as a former field boundary bank subdividing and therefore probably post-dating an enclosed strip field of medieval origin. It seems to have become disused by the second half of the nineteenth century, and may now survive as a slight earthwork.
