Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011 - 2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

Former field boundaries of probable medieval origin are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1946 to 1967, to the south of Gilscott. The curvilinear earthworks correspond in part with field boundaries depicted on the Alwington tithe map of circa 1837. They are not depicted on the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map, published in the 1880s or 1890s, and had therefore probably passed out of use by this date. The earthworks are noticeably less well defined in 1967 and have probably been damaged by ploughing. Aerial photographs of 1999 reveal the northern half of the earthwork to have been obscured by the expansion agricultural buildings associated with Gilscott Farm, and the southern half is no longer identifiable.
