Two short section of trackway of probable Second World War date and military function are visible as earthworks on aerial photographs of 1945, crossing Ravens Slack in Braunton Burrows. They might be sections infrastructure within the U.S. Army’s Second World War Assault Training Centre on the Burrows known as the American Road. They were probably originally part of a single route that connected with the surviving north-south track to the east. However, they do not appear to correspond exactly with trackways visible on later aerial photographs and perhaps were superseded by changing training requirements on the Burrows, and passed out of use by the end of the war. This interpretation is possibly supported by the presence of craters and other training earthworks at circa SS44793467 that appear to divide the two sections of track. Other sections of Second World War trackway have been recorded to the east and south, some of which have remained partly in use.
