HER Number:MDV102582
Name:Possible hilltop enclosure east of Instow

Summary

A curvilinear dark cropmark is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1993. Since it is only visible on a single run of aerial photographs caution must be applied in interpretation; its shape and size is consistent with known later prehistoric or Romano-British circular enclosures, with the potential for below ground remains to survive, but a geological origin cannot be dismissed.

A circular ditch is visible as a dark cropmark.

A curvilinear dark cropmark is visible on aerial photographs taken in 1993, at the top of a hill immediately east of Instow. It is approximately 7 metres wide, and although the southern part is difficult to discern, it may form a circular enclosure of approximately 50 metres in diameter. Since it is only visible on a single run of aerial photographs caution must be applied in interpretation; geological banding to the east manifests as curvilinear dark and light cropmarks around hilltops, but it is possible that the cropmark has formed over a ditch that enclosed a later prehistoric or Romano-British settlement. If so, below ground remains are likely to survive and further investigation, such as geophysical survey, would help to clarify the extent and character of this feature.
