Full description

DPRFP, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV262469.

Vis=18/7/1996 (robinson) dark circular mark is located in the centre of a hollow 50m diam and 5m deep, said by owner to be a limestone quarry filled in. The right angled linear feature is shown on the tithe map as 'linhay and yard'. The broader dark mark on the e coincide with a stone scatter, probably connected with the quarry to the w, as are the radiating marks from the quarry (dprfp).

APH, Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV283322.

Dark circular mark 20m diam with radiating dark lines. Right angled linear feature to e, overlying broader dark semicircular mark. Recorded from the air as a cropmark by f griffith in 1994 (aph).

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (AI&M) (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Cropmarks of a pit approximately 30m by 40m in size are visible on aerial photographs of 1989. The cropmarks sit within a hollow approximately 50m by 45m in size, visible on aerial photographs of 1946 and digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017.
The cropmarks and earthworks are interpreted as evidence of a former quarry pit. The visible features do not correspond with any quarry depicted on the 19th century maps available to the survey but do fall within a plot listed as ‘Chalk Pitt’ on the Tithe Apportionment for Bishopsteignton. This might support the interpretation of the relict earthwork as a former limestone quarry. However, British Geological Society data shows the pit to be sited on slate deposits.
Cropmarks of linear hollows radiating from the pit might be evidence of access tracks into the working area. Irregularly shaped cropmarks of hollows extend into the neighbouring fields to the east, north and south of further cropmarks of possible small rectilinear enclosures. This might be evidence of further quarrying activity centred around a yard or settlement. Alternatively, the rectilinear cropmarks might be geological in origin.
Linear ditch cropmarks of a right-angled enclosure north-east of the main pit are evidence of a Linhay enclosure depicted on the Tithe Map for Bishopsteignton, recorded separately (MDV56050).
