Summary

Curvilinear cropmarks of former ditched or grubbed-up field boundaries of probable medieval date are visible on aerial photographs of 1949, on a south-facing slope to the east of Herton, Tawstock. They are not visible on any later aerial photographs available to the survey and have now been obscured or destroyed by modern housing development.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011 - 2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

Curvilinear cropmarks of former ditched or grubbed-up field boundaries are visible on aerial photographs of 1949, on a south-facing slope to the west of Herton, Tawstock. In 1949 the cropmarks can be seen to be a continuation of a pattern of roughly north-south orientated extant curvilinear field boundaries, probably of medieval origin. The cropmarks do not correspond with any field boundaries depicted on the 1844 Tithe map for Tawstock or the Ordnance Survey first edition 25 inch map, supporting the interpretation that they had passed out of use prior to 1844. The cropmarks are not visible on any later aerial photographs available to the survey and the field in which they were noted has been developed for housing by May 1989.
