Summary

A relict medieval or post-medieval field boundary is visible as a curvilinear earthwork on aerial photographs from 1946. It is likely to have become disused before the mid nineteenth century, although remains survive and the bank is visible on images derived from Lidar data captured in 2006-2007.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011 - 2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

A curvilinear earthwork bank, 3 metres wide and circa 65 metres in length, is visible on aerial photographs from 1946 and on images derived from Lidar data captured in 2006-2007. It is interpreted as a medieval or post-medieval field boundary that it had become degraded and fallen out of use prior to the mid nineteenth century. Although not depicted on the 1841 Tithe map there is a change of vegetation on the north and south sides of a dashed line marked here on the 1880s-1890s Ordnance Survey mapping, indicating different land use either side of a relict boundary. Earthworks are very likely to survive.
