Full description

Cambridge University Collection of Aerial Photography, 1956, CUCAP TK, CUCAP TK40 22-JUL-1956 (Aerial Photograph). SDV350420.

Several linear features are visible as probable structures. Location is approximate.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011-2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

At least four rows of curvilinear structures are visible on aerial photographs taken in 1956, roughly parallel to the north to south aligned road through the Burrows. Three are close together and the fourth is sited some distance to the west, with a build up of sand against it. The features are likely to be a result of military training activity on Braunton Burrows in the Cold War period and may be associated with trenches near the shoreline to the west. The structures are not visible on later aerial photographs, and are likely to have been engulfed by establishing vegetation and shifting sand dunes. The location of the features is approximate and the structures have not been transcribed.
