At least four pits are visible on aerial photographs of 1989 as earthworks on the south-west facing slopes of a shallow combe roughly 600 metres to the north-west of Smythen Cross, centred on circa SS55144434. The date and function of the pits is unknown but they are probably the remains of former quarry pits, possibly of medieval or post-medieval date. The pits do not correspond with any features depicted on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map and had therefore probably passed out of use by circa the 1880s. The three pits south-west of the lane from Smythen Cross to Smythen farm remain visible as subtle earthworks on digital images derived from aerial photographs taken in May 2007, but that to the north-east appears to have been largely levelled, possibly by the conversion of the field from pasture to arable cultivation.
