Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

Two probable ponds are depicted, one either side of the former field boundary. These are interpreted as vestiges of a larger, earlier pit.

The earthwork does not correspond with any depicted feature.

A large, roughly circular depression up to 40 metres in diameter is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs and images derived from Lidar acquired between 1998 and 2012 to the west of West Down Farm. One of three similar features in close proximity, it is probably the remains of a former quarry pit of post medieval date. No quarry or old quarry pit is depicted on the tithe map for Exmouth or the Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map in precisely the same location or extent. A former field boundary, shown on the tithe map and Ordnance Survey First Edition 25 inch map, runs through the centre of the depression, deviating from a straight course as it does so. This deviation might support the interpretation the earthwork pit predated the boundary. Two ponds are also depicted on the tithe map, one either side of the former field boundary. It seems likely the ponds were remains of the larger, former pit. The larger earthwork therefore probably predates the enclosure of the surrounding field system, which has been characterised as post medieval enclosure based on strip fields of probable medieval date.
