Name:Farmhouse at Brimpts Farm, Dartmoor Forest

Summary

Farmhouse is L-shaped in plan with tall lean-to attached to the rear wing and smaller single storey lean-to at the western (left) end of the front of the house. Gabled porch to the centre front. Tiled roof. Thought to have been built in 1854 but appears to overly the footprint shown on the 1840s Tithe Map so may have early origins, unless this was a complete re-build.

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

Depicted on the 1840 Lydford Tithe Map (707 on Apportionment). Smaller building depicted at this site, with extension to the western end.


Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Late 19th century map depicts the house in same L-shaped form as on modern maps, but without the western extension. Two possible lean-to structures along the long eastern wall.

Early 20th century historic map shows a further large extension added to the eastern wall, this may no longer be visible by the time of the 1940s aerial photograph, although the view is not very clear. The western lean-to is still not depicted at this time.

Aerial photograph shows the rear extension to the eastern side of the farmhouse, but possible not the secondary one depicted on the Second Edition Ordnance Survey map. Western extension still not visible.

Survey depicts house and describes construction. Thought to have been built in 1854. Tall, two-storied, L-shaped plan with rear wing having lower ridge and tall lean-to at one end of long eastern wall. Further low single storied lean-to against right (east). Gabled porch to centre front. Modern toilet block by leaft gable.
