Full description

Keystone Historic Buildings Consultants, 1999, Waring Bowen House (Report - Assessment). SDV356374.

The house was built in the late 18th century, for Robert Davy, who established a prosperous shipbuilding enterprise on land in what is now Glasshouse Lane. The layout and surviving original features of the house are wholly consistent with its construction around 1789, whilst the available secondary documentation provides no evidence of an earlier house on the site. In 1860 it was known as 'The Poplars', and subsequently as 'Withymead'. In 1988 it was known as Waring Bowen House. The house was built end on to the street, facing south onto its garden. There was a service courtyard to the rear surrounded on three sides by service buildings. Some of these still seem to survive but are now converted into separate dwellings. The original plan of the house is basically square, three storeys high, two rooms wide and double depth, with a central entrance hall. See report for full details.
