Higher Halsdon seems to have been the estate of Morinus or Moor, which he held in the time of King John. The portion of the Budleigh scrub allotted to Moor by the award in 1212 still bears the name of Scrub or Squab Moor. The present Squabmoor (outside the boundary of the survey area) is shown on the Ordnance Survey 1890 1:10560 map as Heath Hill Cottages (Sheet 93SW). The present Halsdon Cross is stated to have been formerly called Moor’s Cross. A small close at the cross was once Morris’ Cross, which may be a corruption of Moor’s Cross. This area lies partly within the survey area.
